KOTA KINABALU: The Education Ministry plays a vital role in promoting unity among the young, said 1Malaysia Foundation Trustee Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
“The government has a role to play towards achieving unity through policies and actions.
“But we believe teachers are the agents or role models for integration and unity.
“The nation’s progress and development lies in the ability of educators to realise the 1Malaysia vision by encouraging students to inculcate Rukun Negara principles, which will enhance their patriotism,” he said in a statement.
Lee added that there was a need to bring together students from national and vernacular primary schools to enable them to interact with each other and make friends.
“Unity should be the guiding principle for all schools in their activities, ranging from sports to co-curricular activities, in order to foster greater understanding.”
Besides teachers, parents also had to play their role in planting the seed for a 1Malaysia by encouraging their children to mix around and have friends from other races.
“By having their children interact with those from other races, they will become aware of the importance of interracial and interreligious harmony.
“Children can then be colour blind.
“They will perceive the person sitting next to them as friends or otherwise.”
